Zero Waste Ice Tea Recipe

It’s summer and temperatures are climbing. With COVID-19 causing limitations in socialization and venturing out to bars and restaurants is a risk I am choosing not to take, I am indulging in a sweet summer drink that I can enjoy on my patio with my husband.

Ice tea is a wonderful summer drink. It is refreshing, affordable, and can be enjoyed as a mixer for a cocktail or mocktail or straight as ice tea. A wide variety of teas are available in bulk at local co-ops, farmers markets, Tare Market, or online with specialty brands that package their teas in paper (like Well Rooted Teas).

Single Glass Ice Tea Recipe
Yields 1 glass

  • Add half cup of hot water to your mug
  • Add 1 tablespoon bulk Well Rooted Teas to your tea filer and place in your mug, making sure your filter is submerged in the water
  • Let it brew for at least 8 minutes
  • Fill a glass with ice and pour your hot tea over the ice and enjoy!

Pitcher Ice Tea Recipe
Yields 6 cups

  • Add 6 cups of cold water to a pitcher
  • Add 1/3 cup of bulk Well Rooted Teas to your tea filter and place it in your pitcher, making sure your filter is submerged in the water
  • Place your pitcher in your fridge for at least 6 hours and up to a day, depending on how strong you like your tea
  • Strain and enjoy

This ice tea will keep for 3-4 days.  This method can tend to bring out more fresh, floral notes and will extract more nutrients, but overall it results in a more mild flavor.

I hope you enjoy your summer and find something (even if it is glass of ice tea!) that makes you happy.
