Do you want to try a zero waste lifestyle but don’t know where to start? Or do you think you don’t have the time, money, or energy to go zero waste? Here’s a secret that I am learning…. it is way easier than you think. I like comfort, ease, and don’t have a lot of extra time on my hands. But I have discovered that for almost every item there is a re-usable environmental friendly alternative and by being a conscientious consumer, I am naturally transitioning to a zero waste lifestyle.
It is important to remember that to each person zero waste looks different. Being zero waste can mean that you generate less trash than you currently do, it can mean that you literally re-use everything that breakes and you become an expert at fixing things, or it can mean that you educate yourself and make informed choices. No one knows your life better than you and it’s up to you how you want to approach this new lifestyle of yours.
The first step you can take to become zero waste is to look at your lifestyle and ask yourself these questions:
- What kinds of things are ending up in my trash can?
- What kinds of things are ending up in my recycling bin?
- What do I have in my possession that I no longer need or want?
- What single-use items do I have in my house that I can replace with more sustainable alternatives?
- Why do I want to move towards a zero waste lifestyle?
By answering these questions you will have a clear idea of the path(s) you need to take to move forward. You can take those old trinkets to your neighborhood antique store, start stocking up on glass jars so that they aren’t going into your recycling bin, and think about why this matters to you.
